(CNN) -- An alleged drug trafficker suspected of an attack on a U.S. consulate and killing Mexican soldiers has been arrested, Mexican President Felipe Calderon announced Friday, according to the state news agency.
Sigifredo Najera Talamantes, also known as El Canicon, is also suspected of attacks on a television station in Monterrey in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, Notimex agency said.
On Wednesday, the Mexican military arrested the son of a top drug cartel lieutenant.
Authorities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border blame drug cartels for a surge in violence in the region.
About 6,500 people died in the drug war in Mexico last year, Calderon said last week.
