MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- One Mexican tourist died and another was missing Tuesday after a wave dragged them out into the Pacific Ocean, the state-run Notimex news agency reported.

The incident happened at the San Benito beach south of Tapachula, a city in Chiapas state in extreme southwestern Mexico near the border with Guatemala, the news agency said.

Armando Buendia Sanchez, 40, was rescued from the rough seas but died at a hospital, police said. Search efforts continued for the other victim, whose identity was not released.

Witnesses said the two had eaten and had drinks at a nearby restaurant before trying to get into the turbulent ocean from atop a breakwater. A wave suddenly pitched them into the ocean.

People at the scene were able to pull Buendia Sanchez out, but the other person was swept away.
