KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- Eight people were missing and two confirmed dead after a boat capsized on Nepal's Koshi River, about 450 km (280 miles) southeast of Kathmandu, police said.

More than 30 people have been pulled alive from the river, according to Durga Prasad Bhandari, chief district officer of Sunsari, the area where the accident happened.

Initial reports suggested the crowded boat overturned when it hit bamboo poles in thick fog.

Passengers were travelling by boat because flooding last fall damaged the highway in the region.

Journalist Manesh Shrestha contributed to this report.
