KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Coalition forces killed 15 armed militants and arrested another Friday in eastern Afghanistan in an operation aimed at disrupting a suspected Taliban network, according to a U.S. military statement.
Local government sources said at least 10 civilians, including children, were killed in the operation.
The incident occurred in Laghman province when coalition forces approached a compound of the suspected militants, according to the U.S. military.
The suspects fired at coalition soldiers with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
Fifteen suspects were killed in the battle, the statement said.
U.S. forces, along with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Defense, are investigating.
In an incident Thursday, an Afghan civilian was killed by NATO-led troops in southern Afghanistan.
The man was seen digging a hole near the soldiers' base and did not stop digging after soldiers fired warning shots. Soldiers believed the man had an explosive device and shot and killed him.
"ISAF deeply regrets all incidents where civilian casualties are caused by its actions," the military said.
