NEW DELHI (CNN) -- Indian labor authorities rescued 18 child workers in raids at metal-embroidery units in the western state of Gujarat, officials said Friday.
The rescued workers were younger than 14 and were from eastern India, said K.M. Patel, additional labor commissioner in the city of Surat, in Gujarat.
"They have been shifted to a children's home," Patel said. Efforts will be made to contact their relatives in the state of Bihar, he added.
Labor officials in Surat rescued 45 child workers from similar units last week, according to Patel.
Employing children younger than 14 is illegal in India.
Authorities will prosecute the rescued workers' employers, Patel said.
