(CNN) -- The head of Azerbaijan's air force was fatally shot outside his home Wednesday morning, two independent news agencies reported.

Lt. Gen. Rail Rzayev was head of the air force and air defense command, the Turan and APA news agencies said. He was shot as he was getting into his car near his house in the capital of Baku, the agencies and Russian media reports said.

Rzayev, 63, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a hospital, but doctors couldn't save him, they reported.

Rzayev is the first military general shot dead in Azerbaijan, Turan reported. He had held the post since 1992.

APA said the motive and circumstances of the shooting were still unknown.

Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic on the Caspian Sea.
