NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- At least 14 people are feared dead following a train derailment in eastern India Friday, officials said.
The train, going from Howrah in West Bengal state to Chennai in Tamil Nadu in the south of the country, jumped the tracks midway, according to J.P. Mishra, a spokesperson for India's East Coast Railway.
"We are getting reports that at least 14 people have died and 40 have been injured," he told CNN.
The train derailed near a locality called Jajpur Road in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, he said.
CNN partner station IBN reported that as many as 14 carriages of the super fast express train Coromandel Express, came off the track.
It was feared that more passengers could be trapped under the wreckage of the coaches, an official taking part in the rescue effort told IBN.
