NEW DELHI, India -- (CNN) -- Seven people have died in a week after drinking suspected illicitly brewed liquor in the Indian capital, police said Sunday.

Udaivir Rathi, assistant commissioner with the the crime branch of the Delhi police, told CNN that two people have been arrested from the city's Dabri area, an urbanized village, for allegedly selling spurious liquor.

"Seven people died within a week and all of them were men," he said. K. Jegadesan, a deputy commissioner of police, said seven police officers have been suspended from their job in the wake of the liquor deaths.

Police were also questioning several other suspects, he added.
