NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- More than 200 heavily armed suspected Maoists ambushed a police patrol in central India, killing 10 officers and injuring 16, authorities said Saturday.
A team of federal police was on security duty at an election booth when it was attacked Friday, said Rahul Sharma, superintendent of police in the South Bastar Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh state.
A gunfight that erupted after the assault left three attackers dead, according to Sharma.
India holds general elections in scattered voting from April 16 until May.
The Dantewada district is one of the regions that Maoists attack most frequently in India.
