ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A suicide bombing killed 16 people at a police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, police said.

The bomb killed nine police officers and seven civilians, said Riaz Khan, a police official in Pakistan's Charsadda District.

The bomber rammed a vehicle into the police checkpoint, which is just north of Peshawar, Khan said.

The bomb also injured several people, he said.
