(CNN) -- Nine people -- including three election officials -- were feared dead after a small plane crashed in eastern Indonesia on Friday, police said.

The election officials were carrying documents from the April 9 legislative polls, said Bagus Ekodanto, a police chief in Papua, a province in Indonesia.

The plane took off from Ilaga to the remote highlands of Mulia in Papua, Ekodanto said.

Air-traffic control lost contact with the plane at 10 a.m. local time (9 p.m. ET), said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry.

Ervan added that officials are still getting a signal from the missing plane.

A rescue team is trying to find the plane, which was chartered by the local government, according to Ervan.
