NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- A freight truck carrying more than 30 passengers overturned Monday in western India, killing 19 of them, including six children, police said.
The truck had picked up passengers, many of whom sat on steel bars it was transporting from Maharashtra to Karnataka in India's south, said Ravindra Kadam, police superintendent of Maharashtra state's Pune district.
Most casualties occurred because the heavy metal slabs crushed passengers after the truck overturned, Kadam said. Seventeen others were injured.
The truck driver ran away after the crash, police said.
