NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- A land mine planted by suspected Maoists exploded as a police patrol made security sweeps during elections in eastern India, with at least one officer suffering shrapnel wounds, authorities said Thursday.

The blast coincided with India's third round of voting for the new federal government. The general election is being held in five phases extending into May.

"It was a booby trap," according to Rajesh Yadav, police superintendent of Purulia district in the state of West Bengal.

CNN's Harmeet Shah Singh contributed to this story.
