NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- The death toll from stifling heat in eastern India has risen to 31, officials said Monday.
State authorities have investigated 113 deaths since mid-March, said Snehalata Bhuyan, deputy secretary of Orissa state's disaster management department.
Thirty-one of the 113 have been confirmed as sun stroke deaths, she said.
The state capital, Bhubaneswar, recorded a daytime temperature of 40.6 Celsius (105.1 Fahrenheit) on Sunday, three degrees above normal, a weather office report said.
The India Meteorological Department predicts that the heat wave sweeping across interior regions of Orissa and neighboring Jharkhand state might ease during the next 48 hours.
However, rain is expected in India's northwest and northeast regions over the next two days, the meteorological department said.
