Strong quake rattles New Zealand region

(CNN) -- A 6.7-magnitude earthquake rocked New Zealand's remote Kermadec Islands region Saturday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit at about 1:23 p.m. Saturday (9:23 p.m. ET Friday) about 825 km (520 miles) northeast of Auckland, New Zealand, the agency said. The depth of the quake in the South Pacific Ocean was 10 km (6.2 miles).

No other details were immediately available.
