(CNN) -- The commander of Turkey's NATO force in Afghanistan and another soldier were killed this week in a road accident in northern Afghanistan, the Turkish military said Thursday.
The two have been identified as Staff Col. Faruk Sungur, commander of the Turkish Task Force in Afghanistan, and Specialist Sgt. Mevlut Baydur.
Two other Turkish military service members were injured.
The casualties occurred when an armored vehicle had "an unfortunate accident" on Tuesday "on its way to Mazar-e Sharif from province of Faryab where our military officials visited for inspections," the military said.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force says Turkey has about 730 soldiers in the NATO-led force in Afghanistan.
On Tuesday, at least five people were killed when a helicopter went down in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, a local government official said.
The helicopter was providing food and supplies to the NATO forces in the region, where thousands of U.S. and British forces are leading separate offensives against militants throughout the province -- a Taliban stronghold and poppy-growing region.
