KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Nearly 40 people were killed and up to 80 wounded Tuesday night when a truck bomb exploded in front of a construction company in Kandahar, Afghanistan, chief police commander Fazel Ahmed said.
The blast occurred in front of a Japanese construction company that primarily employs Pakistani and Afghan workers, Ahmad Wali Karzai, head of the provincial council, told local radio. The bomb was a tanker truck full of explosives, he said, and the blast was so intense that windows shattered in homes a kilometer away.
Karzai said nearly 40 people were killed and between 50 and 80 were wounded in the bombing. A spokesman from the Kandahar governor's office confirmed Karzai's account to CNN.
Officials also said the blast site was near the building housing NDS, the Afghan intelligence agency. Other buildings, shops and a high school are also nearby, a witness said.
