ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A Taliban spokesman and leader were arrested in Pakistan's volatile Swat Valley, a military official said.

Muslim Khan, a spokesman for the Taliban in Swat Valley, and Mahmood Khan, a Taliban commander in the area, were arrested by security forces, said Pakistan military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas.

Three other militants were arrested in the operation in northwestern Pakistan, Abbas said.

The Taliban leadership in the area has seen an upheaval in recent months as Pakistan's army wages an offensive on the group. Video Watch how tribesmen are countering the Taliban »

Pakistani and U.S. officials believe the group's leader, Baitullah Mehsud, was killed in an August 5 drone attack in Waziristan. A new leader was named afterward.

The arrests come after Pakistan's military announcement earlier this month that 105 militants surrendered after fighting in the Swat Valley.

CNN's Samson Desta contributed to this report.
