ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Police in Pakistan's northwest say they foiled an assassination plot that targeted a provincial minister Monday.
Local villagers tipped off authorities in the North West Frontier Province that a man, carrying explosives, was holed up inside a school overnight to target the province's education minister, said Police Chief Malik Navid Khan.
The minister, Sardar Hussain Babak, was hosting family members at his home about 2 km (1.2 miles) away for the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.
When police could not lure the bomber out of the school, officers used rocket launchers to fire at the building, Khan said.
The bomber then blew himself up, Khan said.
Pakistan's northwest continues to experience near-daily attacks by Islamic militants on civilians and on security forces who are conducting a military operation to rout them.
