In the early 1990s the state of Qatar was nearly bankrupt. It was at that time that the Emir opted to put the country's money into liquefied natural gas.

Now, Qatar's surpluses continue to grow as natural gas output increases.

With its wealth of natural gas supplies, extensive plan for diversification and steady growth rate, Qatar has been flexing its economic muscle in the region.
