(CNN) -- Eight people were killed and 11 were left missing after tropical depression Nangka triggered flooding, a tornado and a landslide in the Philippines, according to disaster officials.

The storm, named Feria locally, was centered at 4 a.m. Thursday (4 p.m. Wednesday ET) 65 miles (105 km) west-southwest of Subic and 106 miles (170 km) west of the capital, Manila, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council. It had maximum sustained winds of 34 mph (55 kph).

Elementary and high school classes were suspended Thursday in Manila and Cavite, Bataan and Batangas provinces, the government said.

Nearly 10,000 passengers were stranded nationwide, the government cited a Philippine Coast Guard report as saying.
