Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- "American Pie" actor Chris Klein checked himself into rehab "to deal with his addiction," his representative said Monday.

Klein, 31, was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving on a Los Angeles freeway last week, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

"After recent events, Chris was forced to take a clear look at a problem he has been trying to deal with himself for years," representative Jaime Primak said. "He understands now that he can not beat this disease alone."

Klein's vehicle was "observed weaving from the (No.) 3 lane into the (No.) 2 and (No.) 4 lane" on the Ventura Freeway in Sherman Oaks, California, at early last Wednesday morning, a news release from the California Highway Patrol said.

Klein, 31, failed a sobriety test, said Officer Francisco Villalobos.

He was released on his "own recognizance" without being required to post bail, the news release said.

"He thanks everyone for their support as he takes all the necessary steps to deal with his addiction and asks for privacy while doing so," Primak said.

Klein is best known for his role as Chris "Oz" Ostreicher in 1999's "American Pie" and the 2001 sequel, "American Pie 2."
