(CNN) -- More than a million people have registered their interest in tickets for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games since sign up began online a month ago, organizers have revealed.

Those who register are not guaranteed tickets, but they will be among the first to find out when to purchase them, London 2012 said. Tickets are due to go on sale in the spring of 2011.

Anyone around the world can register on the site, but 96 percent of the registrations so far have come from the United Kingdom, with a third of those coming from London.

More than 400,000 people have registered their interest specifically in Paralympic events.

"What has been really interesting is that there has been significant interest across all Olympic and Paralympic sports," said Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organizing Committee.

"It should come as no surprise that the British public is so enthused by the prospect of world-class sport coming to these shores, but it is pleasing to see that some of the lesser-known Olympic and Paralympic sports are also set to be well supported."

Around eight million tickets will be available for the Games, with 75 percent of them available directly to the public. They will be available through an application process and a ballot.
