(CNN) -- Briton Mo Farah became the first man in 20 years to claim the long distance double at the European athletics championships with victory in the 5,000 meters in Barcelona.

Farah matched the feat of Italy's Salvatore Amin in 1990 by adding the 5,000m to the 10,000m gold he won on the opening day.

Defending European champion Jesus Espana had to settle for the silver medal, with Hayle Ibrahimov of Azerbaijan claiming bronze.

In a good night for Britain, there was a superb success for heptathlete Jessica Ennis who added the Eurpean title to the world crown she lifted last year.

Ennis beat Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska of Ukraine in the deciding 800m to secure victory over her rival by just 45 points with a championship record of 6,823 points.

Germany's Jennifer Oeser took the bronze medal with a total of 6,683 points.

And Britain claimed a one-two in the men's 400m hurdles through Welsh pair Dai Greene and Rhys Williams. Stanislav Melnykov of Ukraine collected the bronze.

However, there was disappointment for another Briton, Michael Rimmer, who was pipped on the line by Poland's Marcin Lewandowski in the men's 800m final.

Rimmer looked poised to take Britain's first gold in the event since 1990, but Lewandowski's final charge to the line gave him victory by just one-tenth of a second with another Pole, Adam Kszczot, third.
