(CNN) -- John Terry is to leave his future as England captain to national team manager Fabio Capello as the controversy over his alleged affair with teammate Wayne Bridge's girlfriend rumbles on.
The Chelsea star has faced widespread calls for him to stand down from the prestigious role, but he is refusing to speak publicly about the scandal which has featured prominently on the front and back pages of British newspapers.
Terry's fate should not rest with Capello
Terry did issue a brief statement on Wednesday to say he was "keeping his own counsel" in the fall out from the weekend revelations.
His spokesman Phil Hall said: "John Terry asked me to make it clear that he has made absolutely no statement about his future as England captain.
"He is keeping his own counsel until he speaks to England manager Fabio Capello and then Mr Capello will decide what announcement will be made."
Hall's comments followed speculation in various media outlets that Terry would not resign as captain.
Strict disciplinarian Capello returns to England on Thursday after recuperating from knee surgery in Switzerland and the Press Association reported that he is keen to resolve the matter before the European Championship draw in Warsaw at the weekend.
He is also reported to have commissioned his assistant Franco Baldini, who has a better grasp of English, to monitor the situation in his absence but it remains unclear if he will have a face to face meeting with his captain.
The English Football Association (FA) said in a statement on Monday that they would leave Capello to decide what action, if any, to take against Terry.
The 29-year-old has continued to play for his club side during the furore, scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory at Burnley on Saturday and turning out again for their disappointing 1-1 draw at struggling Hull on Tuesday.
Terry was subjected to constant barracking during the game and his manager Carlo Ancelotti said he may give him a break when the Premier League leaders take on Cardiff City in the fifth round of the English FA Cup later this month.
Ancelotti said: "Nothing can distract our concentration in this competition. In every game the Chelsea team has good focus and we can play good football.
"Concentration is always on top. This is an issue for me and John Terry. I think it's not a problem. You can see the line-up against Cardiff.
"If he needs a holiday he will have one and if not, he will play against Cardiff."
British media had reported that Terry would miss the Premier League match to be with his wife Toni, who is supposedly in Dubai to get away from allegations about his infidelity.
