(CNN) -- Manchester City are up to fifth place in the English Premier League table after a comfortable 2-0 home win over Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.
Carlos Tevez gave Roberto Mancini's side the lead in the 29th minute after Bolton defender Paul Robinson fouled Adam Johnson in the penalty area.
Man-of-the-match Johnson, who was making his home debut after signing on transfer deadline day, showed neat footwork to trick visiting defender Robinson into bringing him down.
Tevez duly netted his 19th goal of the season in all competitions from the spot -- although his penalty was struck directly at goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who could only manage to divert the ball into his own net.
Emmanuel Adebayor doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute, racing onto Patrick Vieira's lofted through-ball to lash the ball home.
The victory means City are level on points with Liverpool, but with a game in hand, in the race for the fourth Champions League place.
Meanwhile, Bolton remain just a point off the relegation zone and have won just once under new manager Owen Coyle.
Meanwhile, crisis-side Portsmouth, who face a potential winding-up order on Wednesday over an unpaid Inland Revenue bill, remain bottom of the table -- despite scoring a last-gasp equalizer in a controversial 1-1 home draw with Sunderland.
Darren Bent gave Sunderland a 12th minute lead from the penalty spot after Ricardo Rocha was sent off for a foul on Kenwyne Jones.
But it became 10-a-side early in the second half when Lee Cattermole was dismissed for a second booking within six minutes of his first yellow card.
With time running out, the visitors were then reduced to nine men after substitute David Meyler was shown a straight red card for a clash with Steve Finnan, just two minutes after coming off the bench.
And, in the fifth minute of injury time, Aruna Dindane headed home Jamie O'Hara's deep cross to rescue a vital point for the home side.
Elsewhere, Fulham cruised to a 3-0 home win over Burnley to move up to ninth place in the table.
Danny Murphy opened the scoring midway through the first half after converting David Elm's header from close range, while Elm added his first goal for the club soon after when Brian Jensen parried Bobby Zamora's shot into his path.
Top scorer Zamora added a third with a free-kick from the edge of the area after he had been fouled on the edge of the area.
The result leaves struggling Burnley still without an away victory.
In the evening's other match, Turkish international Tuncay netted a second-half header to earn Stoke a 1-1 draw at Wigan.
The home side had taken the lead when Paul Scharner connected with Charles N'Zogbia's 14th minute free-kick.
