(CNN) -- A deflected Mikel Arteta shot secured a late point for Everton in a pulsating English Premier League encounter with Sunderland.

The Spanish midfielder's 83rd minute effort flicked off defender Phil Bardsley and wrong footed Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

In a seesaw game, Danny Welbeck netted twice for the home side -- once to equalize Tim Cahill's opener, then again to put his side in front.

The point sees Sunderland remain in seventh place in the table on 20 points while Everton climbed into 14th.

Everton started brightly and took the lead after just six minutes as Australian midfielder Tim Cahill leapt to meet Leighton Baines' cross and power a header into the net.

Sunderland responded well and laid siege to the visitors' goal. They got their reward on 22 minutes when Bolo Zenden's cross was stabbed home at the near post by Danny Welbeck.

Again the momentum swung and Everton piled on the pressure as the game neared halftime but defender Sylvain Distin shot over the bar from distance with Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon stranded.

Cahill nearly grabbed a second when he looped a shot over Gordon ten minutes into the second half but Michael Turner cleared his effort off the line and thumped into the post for his trouble.

But Welbeck popped up again to put the home side in front as he flicked Kieran Richardson's inswinging cross into the far corner with a brilliant header before Arteta's goal seven minutes from time.

Both sides had chances to win the game in stoppage time as Welbeck fired wide from eight yards out before substitute Jermaine Beckford fired over the bar with only Gordon to beat with practically the last kick of the match.

In Spain, Getafe drew 1-1 with 10-man Real Zaragoza .

Nicolàs Bertolo put the visitors in front on 34 minutes with a left foot shot from outside the area but Adrián Colunga's second half penalty ensured a point for the visitors despite Leonardo Ponzio's dismissal.
