(CNN) -- AC Milan missed the chance to open up a six-point gap at the top of Serie A on Saturday after being held to a 1-1 draw at mid-table Sampdoria.

Robinho gave Milan the lead in the 43rd minute with a superbly taken volley after he'd exchanged a neat one-two with striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich.

But after the break it was Sampdoria who were making all the running and their perseverance was soon rewarded with a goal -- Daniele Gastaldello setting up Giampaolo Pazzini who shot past keeper Christian Abbiati from close range in the 59th minute.

Juventus missed the opportunity to make up ground on Milan as they also drew 1-1 against Fiorentina in Saturday's evening kick-off.

Defender Marco Motta deflected the ball past keeper Marco Storari and into his own net after only five minutes to hand the visitors the lead.

And it wasn't until the 82nd minute that Juve found an equalizer as Simone Pepe fired home.

Meanwhile in Spain's La Liga, Villarreal consolidated third place behind Barcelona and Real Madrid with a 3-0 away win against Zaragoza.

Two goals in the opening 20 minutes from Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla were followed up by Nilmar's strike in the 65th minute.

Sevilla went down 3-1 at home to Getafe, while in the evening kick-off Espanyol recorded a notable 3-2 away win against Atletico Madrid.

Luis Garcia converted a penalty after 22 minutes to hand the visitors the lead before Tiago struck back for Atletico.

Joan Verdu re-established Espanyol's lead only for Sergio Aguero to tie the match up at 2-2 in the 66th minute. But a strike by Pablo Osvaldo 12 minutes from time sealed victory -- only Espanyol's second away win this season.
