(CNN) -- Manchester City have rejected a transfer request from club captain Carlos Tevez, despite the player insisting he wants to leave English football.

The 26-year-old Argentine has scored 10 league goals for the English Premier League side this season but his relationship with manager Roberto Mancini is reported to be strained. The pair exchanged words on the touchline when Tevez was substituted against Bolton last week.

Tevez is also reported to be missing his two young daughters, now living in Argentina.

"It is with disappointment that we confirm to our supporters that Carlos Tevez has submitted a written transfer request. The club can also confirm that the request has been rejected," Manchester City said in a statement on Sunday.

Tevez missed City's 3-1 win over West Ham, one of his former clubs, on Saturday due to suspension. The club said he had been given special dispensation to take leave overseas.

"Roberto Mancini and all at the club have shown, and will continue to show, sensitivity to Carlos' personal circumstances including the issue of his family being based overseas," City said.

City said Tevez's representative had submitted numerous requests to renegotiate and improve his contract in recent months despite already being the highest-paid player at the club.

"This is both an unfortunate and unwelcome distraction and the club will remain focused on the games ahead in what is turning out to be a very promising season."

However, Tevez, who has been a firm City favorite and one of the club's most consistent performers since his move from arch-rivals Manchester United 18 months ago, later released his own statement confirming his desire to leave the club -- and English football.

"I can confirm I have handed a transfer request to the chairman of Manchester City Football Club," said Tevez.

"I wanted to leave in the summer, but was convinced to return to the club. Sadly, my feelings have not changed.

"My relationship with certain executives and individuals at the club has broken down and is now beyond repair."

Although not naming anybody in particular, Tevez is reported to have fallen out with the club's chief executive Garry Cook.

However, he was also keen to stress that he had "no personal issue" with Mancini, despite their seemingly fractious relationship, and thanked the club's owner Sheikh Mansour for his "understanding and support".
