(CNN) -- A man climbed to the top of a nearly 60-story skyscraper in downtown San Francisco, California, on Monday, where he unfurled a U.S. flag and was promptly detained by police.
"He made it to the top of the building and my understanding is that there were some officers waiting for him," said Albie Esparza, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department.
Authorities identified the climber as Daniel Goodwin, also known as the "Skyscraper Man."
Goodwin, wearing red with an American flag tied around his waste, scaled the Millennium Tower in about three hours.
"I picked that side of the building, because I thought ... 'no one's going to even see me.' I was hoping I could do it without anyone even knowing," said Goodwin, who quickly attracted the attention of police and the Bay Area's news media.
On his website, Goodwin said he planned to climb the tower to help raise awareness of cancer and the country's vulnerability to terrorist attacks on its skyscrapers.
Goodwin was cited on two misdemeanor charges and released, Esparza said.
