(CNN) -- A school bus traveling south on Georgia Highway 113 between Temple and Carrollton overturned Monday, killing a student and injuring 10 others, officials said.

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m., said Gordy Wright, a spokesman with the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Sgt. Justin Howard, with the Georgia State Patrol, said the driver lost control and drove into a ditch.

"As the driver attempted to reenter the roadway, the bus overturned onto its right side. During the process of overturning, one of the students was partially ejected and the bus landed on top of the student," Howard said.

The student killed in the crash was identified as James Rashawn Walker, 17, said Wright, adding that 10 other students were injured.

Kenneth Ross Herringdine, 59, was driving the bus, he said.

Carroll County Schools Superintendent Scott Cowart said the driver was a trainee. A driver trainer was also on the bus at the time of the crash, he added.

Carrollton is in rural northern Georgia, about 50 miles west of Atlanta.

"This is a tragic situation that nobody wants to see happen," Cowart said.
