Eight killed in Venezuela prison riot

(CNN) -- A prison riot in Venezuela left eight dead and 16 injured, the country's penitentiary director told CNN en Español on Wednesday.

Authorities were investigating the motive behind the deadly riot, which happened during visitation hours at La Planta prison near Caracas, the capital.

Shots were fired in the incident, said Consuelo Cerrada, the penitentiary director.
