New Delhi, India (CNN) -- A bus carrying wedding guests fell into a river in northern India early Wednesday, killing at least 21 people, police said.
The crash occurred around 12.30 a.m. local time in Uttar Pradesh state's Jalaun district, police superintendent Prem Gautam told CNN.
About 40 other passengers survived, some suffering minor injuries, he said.
The bus was using a makeshift structure to cross the river because a regular bridge was under construction, according to Gautam.
Police suspect the vehicle lost control and rolled down into the waterway.
