Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) -- Massive landslides killed four people and buried 50 homes Tuesday in West Java as torrential rains drenched the area, rescue officials said.

Rescue workers were trying to find 70 people who were missing, said Priyadi Kardono, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency.

The landslides occurred in the area of Ciwidey in the province of West Java, Kardono said.

About 300 people and rescue dogs have been sent to the area to search, police said. But clogged roads and downed communication lines have hampered the effort, they added.
