(CNN) -- More displaced people have been returning to their homes in southern Kyrgyzstan, where violence earlier this month uprooted hundreds of thousands of people, the U.N. refugee agency said on Wednesday.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said government and media reports indicate that more than 30,000 people -- either internally displaced or refugees who fled to Uzbekistan -- have returned.

People fled their homes in the region because of sectarian violence between ethnic Uzbeks and Kyrgyz.
