Death toll from week of flooding in northeast China rises to 47

(CNN) -- The death toll from a week of flooding in northeast China's Jilin Province has risen to 47 while another 45 people remain missing, state-run media reported Saturday.

A statement from Jilin's civil affairs department estimates that economic losses from the flooding are at about 4 billion yuan, or $590 million, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

The number of evacuations and damaged buildings is also rising. About 25,800 buildings have collapsed since July 24, and about 375,000 people have been forced from their homes, Xinhua reported.

Also Saturday, more than 5,000 chemical barrels that were among 7,000 swept into Jilin's Wende River earlier this week were recovered Saturday.

Jilin Province has recently joined a lengthy list of areas affected by rain and flooding in China this summer. At least 134 million people across 28 provinces have been impacted by the weather.
