Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- At least 50 people were feared dead after a bus plunged into a river in northern Pakistan Thursday, state-run media said.
The bus was bound for Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, and was just a few miles from its destination when the driver lost control, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Imtiaz told the Associated Press of Pakistan.
Witnesses told the APP that the bus was overcrowded and some people were riding on the roof.
Imtiaz said rescue teams and ambulances were dispatched to the scene and that at least 12 bodies have been recovered from the gushing river.
