Four Italian soldiers killed in Afghanistan

(CNN) -- Four Italian soldiers died following an attack in western Afghanistan on Saturday morning, officials said.

Their armored vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device and firearm in the Farah area, the Italian Defense Ministry said.

One more Italian soldier was severely injured, the ministry said.

Italy has about 3,400 soldiers in Afghanistan, according to NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
