Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A district police chief and three police officers were killed Wednesday in Afghanistan's Herat province, according to a spokesman for Herat police headquarters.
The Obai district police chief, identified as Sarajuddin, died along with the policemen in west Herat province Wednesday morning when the vehicle they were riding in struck a mine, said spokesman Noor Khan Nikzad. Three other policemen were injured in the blast, said Naqibullah Arwin, spokesman for the Herat provincial governor.
The police were on the way to rescue a family whose vehicle had been attacked, the spokesman said. "The family was driving in a private vehicle from Chesht district to Herat city for a wedding party" when they came under attack from "enemies," Nikzad said. Three children were injured in that incident, he said.
