Beijing, China (CNN) -- Parades and performances marked the final day of the Shanghai World Expo on Sunday, according to China's official Xinhua News Agency.
The six-month event attracted 73 million visitors and featured exhibits from some 246 participating countries and international organizations that sprawled over 1,300 acres, Xinhua said.
Premier Wen Jiabao presided over closing ceremonies Sunday evening, Xinhua reported.
Last week, organizers said that attendance set a record for world's fairs. Xinhua said the previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan. That event attracted some 64 million people, according to Xinhua.
Mostly Chinese crowds have swarmed the expo, with many people waiting up to eight hours to enter the most popular exhibits.
The long waits have frayed tempers at times, with some visitors pushing and cutting in lines. Soldiers were dispatched at times to control the snaking lines of thousands of people.
