Report: 100 children hurt in school stampede in China

(CNN) -- Nearly 100 children were hurt in a stampede at an elementary school in northwest China on Monday, state media said.

The students were headed to the playground for after-class exercises when some tripped and fell, triggering the stampede, the Xinhua news agency said.

The incident took place in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The injured students were taken to a hospital, Xinhua said.

The school, in Aksu City, has more than 1,800 students, the news agency reported.
