(CNN) -- One person has died and at least four have been injured in an explosion in Alphen Aan Den Rijn in the Netherlands, according to a spokesman for the municipal fire service.
The explosion Monday afternoon damaged four apartments in one building, said Eric Seugling, a spokesman for the fire service.
Emergency crews were working to put out the resulting fire and searching the building for more people, he said.
Suegling described the four injured as "heavily wounded" and said they have been hospitalized.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, he said.
Alphen Aan Den Rijn is about 18 miles south of Amsterdam.
