Jerusalem(CNN) -- Three Israel citizens have been indicted on charges of spying for Syria, the Israeli government said Thursday.

The information about the case is being released now because it had been sealed under a gag order since the men were arrested last month.

They are accused of spying for Syria, contact with a foreign agent, passing information to the enemy and conspiracy to commit a crime, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

The indictments against the men allege that the three passed information and photographs of Israeli army bases to a Syrian agent and planned to kidnap a Syrian pilot who defected to Israel in 1989.

The allegations first came to light last month when riots broke out in the village of Majdal Shams after police searched the suspects' homes.

Majdal Shams is the largest Arab settlement in the Golan.
