Israeli fighter jet crashes in southern Israel

Jerusalem (CNN) -- An Israeli fighter jet carrying two crew members crashed Wednesday night in southern Israel during a routine training flight, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement.

The incident, which involved an F-16I Sufa ("Storm") jet, occurred in the town of Makhtesh Ramon at approximately 8 p.m. (1 p.m. ET), the statement said.

Rescue forces were searching for the two crew members.

The commander of the Israel air force, Maj. Gen. Ido Nehushtan, has formed an investigating committee, headed by an Israeli air force colonel, to investigate the incident, the statement said.

All training flights for the F-16I Sufa fighter jets have been suspended, it said.
