Kabul, Afghanistan CNN  — 

President Hamid Karzai condemned Thursday what he said was a bombing by coalition forces that killed seven civilians, six of them children, in southern Kandahar province.

“Initial reports as stated by the district sub-governor himself indicate that an air strike carried out by the international forces in Siacha village in Zheri district killed seven persons including six children and injured another two young girls,” Karzai’s office said in a news release.

Karzai has ordered an investigation into Wednesday’s incident, it said.

The United Nations-authorized International Security Assistance Force said Thursday it too has begun an investigation.

“This unfortunate incident occurred when coalition forces identified, and responded to, offensive actions by insurgents,” ISAF said in a statement.

The commander’s inquiry will be aided by a Joint Incident Assessment Team.
