Thirty-three people were killed and 13 injured in northeastern Brazil Saturday when a truck crashed head-on into a bus, the state-run Agencia Brasil news agency reported, citing federal highway police.
The crash happened in Bahia state, close to the city of Milagro.
According to police, the bus, which was carrying 44 passengers, was overtaking another vehicle on the highway when it was hit head-on by a truck. A trailer that was passing through at the same moment was also caught up in the wreck, Agencia Brasil reported.
Thirty-one people were declared dead at the scene and two died at a hospital, police told the agency.
Police suspect that the bus was carrying out an unauthorized transportation of rural workers for the sugar-cane cutting business, Agencia Brasil reported.
