Texas holds 9th execution of 2011

(CNN) -- Texas authorities Wednesday executed a onetime gang member for the killings of two men in 2002.

Martin Robles was put to death by lethal injection at 6:21 p.m. Wednesday (7:21 p.m. ET), the state attorney general's office announced.

The 33-year-old was convicted of the November 2002 slayings of two rival gang members in Corpus Christi. A co-defendant was sentenced to life in prison.

Texas leads the United States in the use of capital punishment. Robles is the ninth convict executed there in 2011 and the 473rd since the practice resumed in 1982.
