(CNN) -- U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina has been hospitalized with what appears to be a "chronic viral-type infection," according to a statement from his office Thursday.
Wilson "is currently under treatment for the signs and symptoms of a chronic viral-type infection" at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, South Carolina, said the statement from W. Eric Dell, the congressman's chief of staff and counsel.
"While the exact infectious agent has not yet been defined, there is no evidence of serious complication and complete recovery is expected," Dell's statement said.
Last week, Wilson's office announced that a series of appearances would be rescheduled "due to his recent possible contraction of Lyme disease."
Wilson, a conservative Republican, is perhaps best known for shouting "You lie!" at President Barack Obama as the latter addressed a joint session of Congress in 2009. Wilson later apologized and was formally admonished by the House of Representatives.
