Los Angeles (CNN) -- Mel Gibson's lawyer met with Los Angeles prosecutors Tuesday to discuss the criminal investigation of the actor, the district attorney said Wednesday.
"Allegations of domestic violence involving Mel Gibson are actively under review by the District Attorney's Office," Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said in a written statement.
Cooley's office is considering evidence gathered by sheriff's investigators to decide if a domestic violence case will be made against Gibson because of an incident a year ago with his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.
Detectives are also investigating Gibson's charge that Grigorieva, a Russian musician, tried to extort him with recordings she made of his telephone calls, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman said.
The couple is in a bitter legal fight over custody of their three-year-old daughter.
The sheriff's investigation findings have been in the hands of prosecutors since August.
"Mr. Gibson's attorneys met yesterday with Airport Branch prosecutors and provided information they felt was relevant to the matter," Cooley said Wednesday. "Information received will be taken into account in deciding whether or not to file charges."
