(CNN) -- Barcelona's French international defender Eric Abidal is recovering at home after undergoing emergency surgery on a liver tumor, the Spanish champions have confirmed.

The 31-year-old was operated on last week after the problem was discovered during a routine medical check earlier this month.

A statement on the club's website said Abidal, who is a key part of Barcelona's team as they compete for a domestic and European treble this season, would be able to exercise again in four weeks.

It read: "The player was discharged from hospital yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon and is now resting at home.

"The post operation process has been satisfactory in all aspects and no complications have occurred."

According to club doctors, Abidal "will continue the recovery process at home and it is estimated that he will be able to begin physical exercise in four weeks' time and then later to rejoin the squad training sessions."

Goodwill messages have flooded in from the club's supporters and Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid's star player, also wished him a quick recovery.

Abidal joined Barca from French club Lyon in 2007 and has been an ever present this season.
